I know , one of the guys uses a dremil to make rings out of coins , but as for cleaning up artifacts I think it would be to viscious.

I should imagine the dremil could prove to be a useful tool in cleaning certain objects but i would use caution.............................

Personally I would,nt clean any coins or artefacts until they,ve been identified  Huh and then I definately would,nt use a dremel it,s a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut Shocked Shocked

Digga - I would be more inclined to use it to sharpen the edges of your spade - an angle-grinder can be a bit too aggresive and harder to control along the sides of a cut-down spade, but a dremil would be easier to keep along the edges. Wink

Do practise on worthless items first.

My first adventure with a Dremil/Dremel  was using the white fibre disc that looked nice and innocent like compressed cotton.
I touched it against the find and it cut a grove like a hot knife through butter.

So start on the slow setting !

i used i tiny cutting disk on two taps with a dremmel and it went through it like butter, i am sure it would be exellent at turning copper pennys in to more useful items, but as for cleaning them i wouldnt use it on any thing with any sort of value.

when finds are returned from FLO, i wax them with a micro crystalline wax polish [renaissance] - leave them a few hours to dry and then use the dremel on slow speed to lightly buff up the polish.

results can be excellent.

I was always under the impression especially with roman finds to just use soapy water and to be very careful to ensure before item is bagged etc, that it is dry.

sometimes with roman coins, washing the dirt off can remove any outline on obverse or reverse. it's often best to lightly dry brush the coin with a soft brush, then hand it in for recording. on return, if u like the state its in, use the wax above to seal its context.
