Hi Ian

I used to think you had to leave rare and expensive coins alone untill i read up on what the dealers and experts do to them...

If like me you got loads of time on your hands have a look around the www.

Experts think nothing of stripping them with electrolyis and then re-aging then using chemical or a kind of electro-plating
One american dealer i read about used a Brown boot polish with a number of other treatments to put some age back on the coins

Not had much success with electrolysis but had some good results with the foil & soda on silver although would not try with a hammered Tongue

Don't worry about using the foil, soda and boiling water on hammered Jonny, just lifts off the detritus and doesn't damage the coin

If i do use electrolysis i never do on anything of value
as by cleaning artifacts you are taking the age off them

Never been very keen on the results of electrolysis, but i would'nt mind having a go at re-silvering a few livery buttons. But i think you need the right chemicals ?,might look in to that and give it a go.
