They are nice coils and very sensitive, I used one for years in my beach detecting days but changed to the 12x15 SEF which I found far more stable. If you come across a cheapish second hand one then get it but if you're buying new then go for the SEF. ;)

Out of idle curiosity Chef Geoff, what would a second hand wot coil cost in reasonable condition ?? ;D

I think a realistic price would be around the £100 mark give or take £10 ;)

Alternatively you go for a NEL Coil  ::)   A tad heavier but extremely good on separation and I think it improves the I.D.  just a thought.

I think they only do the smaller hunter coil for the Sov Val

Yes Geoff, that's the one I bought for the Safari. Dread to think how heavy the BIG one is. :o  Good coils though. All I need is a few good targets and I'll find them.

The SEF is the better coil but can have issues with how waterproof
it is if used submerged for long periods.
So to be extra safe you should silicone where the cable goes in the coil.
The WOT is beach proven with the best build quality of any coil and a tough as old boots
and has been used by thousands in the surf so will not let you down.
Pays ya money takes ya chances
Plus if any one is using a Excalibur they will chuck waterproof coil connectors in for you
with full wiring details
so you can swap ya coils out on the fly  ;)

I used a Sovereign Elite and a 15" WOT with bath and shower sealant around the cover for many years.  Deep, deep set up!  Currently got a WOT on my Explorer SE.  Very happy with it; have not tried an SEF so will not comment.  Have got a NEL on my X-terra 705.  Very good on small targets and has the edge over the multi-frequency machines now that the ground it drying out.  Good set up on the ploughed and rolled.

Hope this helps

John

I find my 15" wot coil appears more stable than the pro coil on my se pro, only real problem is the weight, my arm starts dropping off after a couple of hours detecting. ;D

never tried the sef but my wot coil has found me plenty of bling on the beaches over the last few years and i'm more than happy with it but will admit it is a bit on the heavy side but so is the sef coil

The WOT on my Explorer SE does not chatter on good, clean, sandy or muddy beaches, and does not chatter at all on pasture.  It starts to get unhappy when I work it around junky stuff and changing ground conditions.  Should really be using a smaller coil like the SE Pro supplied in such conditions.  WOT is designed to cover large areas.  Not going to get the best results with it if trying to get between junk.

Like a few people say, a tad on the heavy side, especially on an SE, but if you put it on a straight shaft and hip mount your Sovereign control box you have a GREAT beach set up.

Are you in Pembs Prospectors Musketball?

John
