Title: A Good Search
Post by: celticspikey on January 21, 2017, 10:50:54 AM
It’s been hard, due to soggy ground conditions to get on my Med 1 & Med 2 fields of late however as the temperature had plummeted Thursday night I thought I would check the condition of the field Friday and I’m glad I did. I was on the field detecting by 9am, and sure enough it had been a hard frost which made the ground easy to walk on without clogging the coil and boots up!! Well for now at least?
Any way as can be seen it was a decent search the purse bar came not far from where I found a small spill of coins many years ago consisting  of Henry V111,Groat, and half Groats, plus a Edward V1 Shilling, so it is possible I guess the coins may have been lost in this purse?  If this bar is of that date that said it might not be associated. My next find in-between the lead and occasional shotties was what I am pretty sure is a Roman amphora shaped Chape? These were highly prized by the military in the 4th-5th cent AD. The other item is a silvered strap end and one I have not seen before! medieval for sure but not sure on its date any thoughts?  The other items are a medieval hand grenade mount and a roman coin and jetton. As you will see from pictures the sun made short work of the frozen ground and conditions became undetectable and difficult to replace crop, whilst the farmer is good as gold with crop searching it would not be fair to leave the field in a poor state so after 4 hours searching I left for another day, it probably needs a god few days of warm dry weather before I can return though

Paul

Some really nice finds there again  :). I know what you mean about the mud I went out this morning for a few hours, while the frost was there it was Ok as soon as the sun softened the ground it was a nightmare.
The fields we discussed before I now have permission to crop search them, which I din't before so I as you did left, better to fight another day than annoy the farmer.

Mark

The triangle item is a very early Saxon buckle, based on similar late Roman ones..
Thanks for your comments guys.... ;)
