Author Topic: Bronze Medieval Ring  (Read 3588 times)

Went out to one of my new farms yesterday evening with Mark, a farm in terms of finds I thought very little of; the place is actually owned by one of my old Scout leaders!  The farm looks no older than 18th c and is noted on a 1799 map of the area when very little else was, and it is on marginal land (heavy clay) and is very boggy in parts so my hopes weren’t high.  Amongst all the junk and tubes this popped up, a late medieval bronze finger ring with line and diamond decoration.  Given that there is no obvious medieval settlement in the immediate area and the ring was found in an area right by the house, I am wondering how it came to be there.   Casual loss?       Undecided Undecided

Nice find Jaydogg! Anything else turn up? I never knew you were a scout - can't really see you singing "ginganggooley"!

I am off overseas shortly, but we'll meet up when I return for a detecting session mate. Got 3 weeks off in July as well with hardly any plans, so detecting time it is.

Found this Liz 1d at the same place.  I also found a silver button with a heart and arrows on it, but it had unfortunately taken a battering and is in pieces so it isn’t worth posting.  A shame as I think its quite old.

Sorry Neil my phone still isn’t working so it will be a one way conversation if you ring.  Give Johnny a ring and we can sort something out for when you return.

Nice finds Jay and Mark. According to Mark Lodwick, copper alloy rings like this are very difficult to date. One I had back from him recently was dated anywhere between Roman and post-medieval!

If the Lizzie is roughly penny sized, it's either a threefarthings or threehalfpence as it has the rose and date which pennies don't have.

Thanks for the info Peter.  I will post a better picture of the coin later so that you can see it, and ID it properly.
