The Gold coins have now been sold, the Corrio went for £2000 and the Atribates £350. I prefer and collect artifacts as they are more personal and one off's, where coins were made in their millions.

Coins will always flutuate in value as more hoards are found, so what is rare today might not be so rare tomorrow.

How did you come to find the iron spearhead - do you dig every iron signal?

On a few of my sites I dig everything, as so many early finds were made of iron, but it can pay off, if you don't mind a lot of digging..

I've covered a lot of ground over the years, to find a few nice bits. I have now detected on 103 farms in Gloucestershire, over a 25 year period. Many of those site were fairly barren and I have never returned, but occasionally you hit a good area which produces a few interesting artifacts. One site alone produced 137 Roman brooches, but has no sign of a settlement, very strange.

you must have covered some acres then  lol:). guess it just shows you should try everywhere you have permission even if there are no records on that area

im sure most detectorists do the research on a area then try to get permission ,im the other way around i get the area do the research ,look at the finds and most of the time these sites are productive, i have detected a couple of farms where i will not go again simply cause i gained permission found no history or finds,,,it can take hell of a long time to do your homework on a site only to find you cant get on there,,most times i find those sites with no history are usually the better ones regarding finds ???i guess that is cause everyone who brought a tecter in the 70s also went to the history section of the library

well said paulywow , im of the same opinion , most of the farms across the south of the uk i search on ,i just got the ok to detect on the after the finds came then i/ we did research .. there are days where i find sod all but then hit a hot spot , and it s anthing from staters to cap badges....its all part of the joy.. even the baron times..

I spend most evenings researching sites, checking old record, archaeologists reports, in fact just about every type of research you can do. Sites which should produce finds are often barren, probably because they have been detected to death over the years.. It’s the unknown sites which I like to stumble upon with no historical importance, often produce the best finds. I try and cover as many sites as possible  and slowly whittle them down to the most productive area‘s.

After a day or two on a farm you can usually tell whether  there is something there or not, although the site where I found my Bronze Age hoard had been detected by the Swindon  detecting club, they eventually abandoned it because they thought they had found everything, how very wrong.
