Nice brooch before the rain started

Hi All

decided this morning to get some detecting in before the rain started (as the sun was shining), got a few coppers (cartwheel, irish 1806 penny) from the field I got the 1/2 sov a few weeks back, but as there was no silver or gold this time went to my favourite field, which produced this nice disc brooch - I'm sure Chef would let me know the specific type - the only book I have suggests it is a 'Type Z' from Wroxeter, but it could as well tell me it is from Mars

Anyway, I like it, and what's more, it is complete

A lovely find and very unusual from this side of the country, in fact plate brooches in general are pretty thin on (or in) the ground.
Type Z where on earth did you get that one from
It's a Hattatt Type 1035 and archaeologically is recorded as more frequently found from Hampshire up through East Anglia to Yorkshire.
They are dated between 180-250 AD
One other difference is that it's one of a group which has an applied edge which means that the rim was put on and is not part of the original casting, usually a white metal probably pewter.

Thanks - it appreciated - I have thought about buying the 4 volumes of Hattatt , but they always seem to be popular...

There have been a number of interesting brooches from the site - a fantastic, large, enamelled one found by another DW member at the end of last year, and a rare shield brooch found at the end of 2011 (by me) - I've attached a photo of that one too

I've got 'The Archaeology of Roman Britain' by RG Collingwood and Ian Richmond (revised ed 1969, 1st pub 1930) which I picked up for £1.50 in a National Trust Shop in the Lake District a few years ago. It covers a range of things (and types of them) such as CelticSpikey's roman pot, but obviously predates Hattatt and isn't specialist - but it does have line drawings of 120 fibula - the Group / Type is based on RG Collingwood's work

Now that's even more unusual, Hattatt 605, again more common further north and east and of the same date. It's officially a plate brooch and is shield "like" rather than being a shield brooch.

Collingwood is still cited as a references but Hattatt has become the standard. For reference though Hattatt is fast being overshadowed by "Brooches In Late Iron Age And Roman Briton" by D.F. Mackreth.

Yes - the term used seems to be 'Pelta' brooch. It took me a while to remember it. When I showed it to Mark Lodwick he initially didn't even think it was roman (although I'd already got as far as finding other examples).

To some extent the two images also show how I have improved in detecting - I've recovered today's example whole, whereas I'm convinced there's still the missing bit of the Pelta brooch in the ground. whilst the vertical break was not caused by me, there's a spade mark running horizontally across it.....

I'll have to look up that new brooch reference work - it's amazing how much information is still in books and not on the net!

Does something like that have to be declared as possible treasure even if it isn't precious metal ??
