Title: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: ysbytymike on October 17, 2011, 02:53:24 PM I normally won't touch Tesco with a barge pole because of their attitude toward motorcyclists at the petrol pumps. But, went in the other evening just to find a plastic jug to make a hand sand scoop for my wife for when she's working the beach, when I came upon this in the kitchen section.
£6:00 each for the containers (stainless steel) - £12-00 over 10+ years isn't so bad I suppose. The rest are just bits I had hanging around my workshop Old alloy brush handle Few bits of metal bear A few SS nuts and bolts. Saves the £100 + their asking on e-bay Mike Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: legio11augustus on October 17, 2011, 02:59:02 PM nice idea

Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: rjm on October 17, 2011, 03:57:29 PM Nice work. I've had home made foot assisted sand scoops before but they have always broken as they get hammered on the beach. I eventually got a stainless steel one professionally made that's never going to break. I hope yours lasts and you have better luck than me! Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: ysbytymike on October 17, 2011, 04:11:41 PM Dimensions are 12cm by 16.5cm. Not that large but quite a sturdy SS container.
I do still have to enlarge the holes on the back and bottom slightly but that's just a few minutes work. For the level of beach work I do, it should be OK for a while. Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: GoldieLookinChain on October 18, 2011, 07:12:05 PM im working on my mk 2 beach scoop.the last one i made lasted 2 months.weldone mike, its ridiculous the price of scoops Maybe but a good scoop saves so much time and your back. You do pay for what you get. My old spade and garret pin pointer was a good combo but no match for my scoop. Hunting at night is so easy with a scoop. For just dry sanding and fun a home made is fine. But if you want to maximise detecting time a good scoop is the way to go. The more rubbish you can dig in the shortest time leads to luck. I forked out 120 on a Stavr scoop and have not been disappointed. With out it hunting in the water would be impossible. Every one can hunt the sand but only a few hunt the water plus no one uses disposable bbq,s in the water lol Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: Jassy on October 18, 2011, 08:03:59 PM shovels dont last long do they? Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: dances with badgers on October 19, 2011, 05:25:26 PM my plan is to test my scoop to destruction then rebuild it ,keep doin that until its unbreakable.thats what they did with jeeps during the war ;D

I've been through the home made period and it's false economy. Mine broke and I was then stuck for the day with a wonky scoop. I looked into getting a pile made as they're as rare as rocking horse manure but it never came off. Eventually invested in one off the internet but I note thatr since I bough mine they've increased in price. I bought my stainless steel sod buster about 10 years ago for about £35 and they're now about £55..... a great investment and hedge against inflation! ;D Title: Re: Beach Sand Scoop Post by: dances with badgers on October 20, 2011, 07:32:28 AM i deserve to be left with a wonkey scoop lol :D
