Being roughly half way to Christmas, I have been contemplating metal detecting items to put on my Christmas wish list. I often get W H Smiths vouchers for Christmas and Birthdays and they take care of my detecting magazine costs. I have placed a Detech Ultimate coil at the top of this years list but have recently been pressed to consider the purchase of a long handled sand scoop.

When I first started beach detecting I used a Maplins hand-held sand scoop but since purchasing a Garrett ProPointer I never use the scoop any more. It sounds as though a long handled scoop would ease the strain on my ageing back and reduce the sometimes acute back discomfort that follows a day's detecting on the sands. Since rationing my time detecting on the beach and do ing some back stretching exercises at the end of the day, things are a little better but perhaps a long handled scoop would improve the situation no end.

I have been looking around and was a little shocked by the price of some stainless steel scoops. I also heard of a detectorist who bought a scoop and felt that he had been ripped off by the guy who supplied it. I would be interested in hearing from any of you guys, or gals, who can provide reliable information on long handled sand scoops and their reliability.

Perhaps I should try and make my own! ?

This is my home made scoop, 2mm ally, drilled, and then a broom handle fitment from the local farmers coop, makes life a lot easier digging deep stuff from wet sand,

Thanks for the reply m8; I think that I will try and build one my self, whilst waiting for Santa to stick an Evolution scoop in my stocking.  Wink Wink
