Title: New Permission Finds
Post by: Meatslicer on November 30, 2013, 08:25:33 PM
Had a couple of new permissions this week, in Abergavenny and Llantwit Major.

Found a copper George 111 that I can't identify, and a silver-gilt brooch (?) that looks pretty ornate but not sure of its age.

See what You lot think!

Eric

Brooch looks like a Tudor hooked clothing fastener.

Would appear to be silver gilt. The hook has broken off it.

Nice finds  Eric!

I agree with most of the above, so well done all on the IDs.

The first one is a gaming counter, something like this:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=36075&cat=207 (http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=36075&cat=207)

The second item is a 16th century silver-gilt clothing fastener. This one is similar, but is missing the attachment loop, whereas yours is missing the hook:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=27365&cat=102 (http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=27365&cat=102)

Should be reported as possible Treasure if you want to do the right thing.

I wouldn't say nobby was wrong, these would have been gilded originally and probably attempts were made to pass them off as guineas.

Oh Doc don't say that, can't you just say that he was more wrong than right lol

I was confused coz the counter had a bust that looked more like George the second and the reverse looks like a Guinea. The dimples all over it make it look like it was cast rather than struck or milled. It was in the garden of a house that was a mint in the 16th and 17th century so it could possibly have been made on site using old equipment and counterfeiting dies.
The pin looked ornate but the pin attachment on the back of it looked like a modern soldering joint so I am surprised its so old. The gilding showed up when I cleaned it in my ultrasonic bath.
I can't claim to have known what either of them were definitely, so I'm not going to comment on degrees of wrongness!

Cheers all.

Reported the pin to Gwent coroner and taking it in to Mark at Cardiff on monday.

The farmers tickled too. He's never had detectorists on his land before, I showed it to him after I'd just dug it out and it was still covered in mud. I'll be going there for the next few months I think!
