They are breaking the law anyway and would just continue after a ban, so they are not worried about the real hobby. Ba+@*>d's

i don't think a ban of any kind will bother these people, the only way to stop them is a threat of jail and a summons to the sum of the value of all they have taken and damage done to any property.(viv)

Well I'm sorry but I absolutely agree with the article. It is making a definite distinction between Metal Detecting and Nighthawking. The law they are pushing for is "Metal Detecting without permission"  . Not ,  "ban metal detecting" , or "license metal detecting" . I think its fair and all law abiding detectorists should speak out against Nighthawks.

I agree in principal but where do you draw the line? lets say someone buys a child  one of those toy detectors and they in the park would that be illegal? then what about beaches would you need permission? Dont think that cant happen look at conkers and everything else thats been taken from us, common sense goes outer the window thats my only concearn

i still dont know why there cant be a minimum sentence for the crime of "night hawking".
and am very suprised that after the recent video shown on bbc, of night hawks caught in the act , that no one has recognized them and contated the police.
perhaps that might have something to do with the fact that these thieves are NOT  part of a club, and certainly NOT  associated with any  governing body for the hobby.
I would love to see these individuals named , shamed and locked up.

I agree with what should be done to stop these thieving hooligans, because thats all they are, however if farmer whatshisname feels that strongly about our heritage, why doesn't he get of his arse, get in his landrover and go and patrol his Fields to keep them out, the same as myself and my farmers who's land i shoot on have to do to stop the louts with their lurcher's lamping illegally, and we facing idiots with guns, not metal detectors >:(

These night hawkers are giving us all a bad name guys, and as a result we are all being tarred with the same brush, catch them , prosecute, name and shame them i say  >:( >:( >:(

What about a campaign , by detectorists against Nighthawkers.  Nighthawkers are the  Drug taking sportsmen/women of our hobby. Done by the minority spoiling and giving a bad name to the law abiding participants.

Rather us go on the defensive about our hobby I think we should go on the offensive against Nighthawkers and make a bloody noise about it. We should show that the majority of detectorists will not stand for these people spoiling our great hobby.

Agree with you on this Rob. The more vocal and lobbyist about the hawkers the more a line can be drawn between true honest detectorists and criminals.

I find it strange when you hear in the news etc about detectorists who find treasure trove items tecting withut permission of landowners are allowed to keep items / payouts. That in itself sends out the wrong signals  :(

Those two father and son recently taken to court by a local policeman found with bronze age axes claiming they didnt have time to report their finds etc, were let off, even though the owner hadnt gave permission !

Unless the penalties start scaring off these people, or the detecting franternity take action, the hobby will contine to be scarred !

I often am out early hours or late after dark, and am beginning to think I might print off some sheets with details etc of the landowners showing i have permission just incase someone/police take an interest !

Very good points Outlaw, I do wonder sometimes how much people think they can get away with. I posted earlier in the year about two detectorists who I saw in the Vale of Evesham and having a bit of time decided to stop and have a chat to see what they were finding. this was about mid day on a warmish sunny day and when I got about a hundred metres from them They legged it like a rocket. Though we had a laugh about it at the time on the site you did get the impression they were there uninvited so where are the boundaries of these people.
