Title: Some recent finds...
Post by: jtalbot0001 on April 03, 2011, 01:37:51 PM
I wrote a long essay and it disappeared because my one file size was too big....sniff, well, to some it up again, I went on a new field which was just being ploughed, never seen this field being ploughed before, on Friday and Saturday, I had a go, with kind permission of the owner, and came away with these finds. A Silver Fob Seal with a yellow glass intaglio of a Lion facing left (when applied) , a Roman Brooch, an open top thimble, all 3 being my first finds of these, the rest of my finds are flints, buckles, not sure if the round one is a Ring Brooch or a buckle, a Livery Button with a Hawk or something, and a worn Roman Radiate Coin. So delighted with them all, still smiling :) I hope to go again tomorrow, to be continued.....

Nice going Jon, Love the fob seal. I think the button depicts the head of a Griffin and my guess would be an annular brooch rather than a buckle. The Roman Brooch is late 1st early 2nd century.
A brooch and a coin would certainly say to me that there are more coins there.

Manged to find this on Monday, along with a Victorian Sixpence dated 1881, but sadly had to go after two hours since the farmer began to seed, just feel this little field has so much more to offer... Is there any chance of an ID on this Hammered Penny? Besides it being fragmented (done in antiquity since the edges are toned), it is heavily clipped, which makes it look smaller than what it was originally. I cannot make out the bust side at all, pretty smooth by the looks of things. Even if it is a broad date on the coin, please let me know the possibilities. Thanks, Jon

I've been checking for the seal fob symbol. The Lion Rampant is the seal of the Royal house of Scotland. Is there any hallmark or other distinguishing marks on the fob itself?

Eric

Hi Eric,

I have tried briefly to look for hallmarks when I first found it, but haven't seen any, I will spend a bit more time and have a look again and will let you know. Thanks for telling me about what the seal means. Will reply tomorrow.

Cheers,
Jon

Jon just to give you something to think about and you would have to do a bit of research, but as you know I lived in the village for 15 years and have a huge amount of notes on it's history.
One of these refers to the influx of Flemish weavers to the village in the 18th century. Now putting 2 and 2 together I may have got five but the symbol of Flanders which is where they came from is:-

Definitely food for thought if nothing else, even down to the colours.
