Both yes and no Chris, although we view them as adornments the brooches in history were in effect large safety pins with a very practical purpose and so the fashion and dress of the day would dictate if you wore one or two, in the the Roman period Women wore a dress called a Stolla that was basically a tube and needed fastening at both shoulders and women in the early to mid Anglo Saxon period wore a type of pinafore that required the same fixing and many of the brooches from these times have evidence of a fixing of either a chain or beads joining the two, men usually only needed one when wearing a cloak. As too annular brooches in particular no I don't think there is any real evidence of them normally being worn in pairs Wink
cracking reply chef  Grin, now i know what a annular brooch is for  Grin

Geoff, I thought I was getting more like Hilda Baker.   Roll Eyes

More and more often these days I say something and John looks at me quizzically, pauses and then corrects a word I've used.
I think my brain is suffering from Dyslexia.   But it's still a good idea to check out your bits. Grin

There come a time in ones life where you can be happy in finding a cartwheel penny/halfpenny because you can at least ID it without the aid of glasses.

But there again, quote of the week, it pays to check your bits!!!

Locally the silage is on its way in so I may try my luck for another 'washer' tomorrow.......................Doug

Best of luck for tomorrow Doug.  Wink
Now I'm surrounded by yellow fields I think they can wait for a day.  I feel the call of the Sea so I'll go and wander aimlessly in the Sunshine for a couple or three hours tomorrow.

p.s. It's not my eyes I'm worried about. What with bowels and bits and wishful thinking, I've done well this week. Embarrassed Roll Eyes Cheesy

Thanks Geoff,
This is a great place to learn and expand one's knowledge. It was just something I had heard somewhere and had forgotten all about it until seeing Doug's washer.  Wink
