Well Neil, that is a good question. This is what PAS have to say on the matter;

"A cast copper-alloy zoomorphic spout from a 15th-century pedestal-base ewer,  It was cast separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on via a long sloping seam."

Now I agree with your idea that these were from something far more portable. I can't seem to find a complete example of a ewer with this still attached and by the sheer quantity of these that are found it would point to it being from a more personal drinking vessel. Also the mention of soldering doesn't seem to fit as the angle of the V cut were it would join is far too acute.

nice finds geoff the dog mouthed spout date is correct it was used as a priests lavers i found mine last month and had taken it to our monthly club neeting where mark ludwiig was in attendance   Grin
