Title: First time out in a while...good to be back.
Post by: Jon1987 on April 06, 2012, 02:27:54 PM
Well, after months of hectic house decorating and no dectecting, I finally managed to get out in the fields today.  ;D

Must say it was fantastic to be out again and only about 10 mins into it I had my first Hammy of 2012.

I have included a picture but it's very worn and the heads side is completely blank. Any ideas though would be appreciated.  ;)

I also had this wierd object. No idea if it's old, junk, a broken piece of farm equipment? Again, any ideas would be great

I get withdrawal symptoms If I leave it too long between detecting sessions ;).  Well done with the hammered.

Don't know if this will help but the strange object has one of those arrow head type stamps on it. Meaning army property I think?

Looks like:           /|\

Hi Jon
Long time no see.  No idea what your part mystery item is but I'm sure I've seen that pointed end on something else but can't place it. Do you know what the metal is.??

Val

Hi Val,

Yes, long time no see. I have been extremely busy decorating and doing up the house. How are you? Hope all is well.

The item seems to be a copper alloy. Brass maybe. Very yellow.

Hi John, if it is what you say, and there is an arrow like mark on that item, then that I can say was typically used by the army, if that is the same marking I'm thinking of. I know it was marked on Bayonets used during the 2ND Anglo Boer War, 1899-1902, see the pic, taken of a bayonet. I'm sure the military used it some years before that, have no idea if is still continued to be used. I cannot tell you what it means actually just, that I have seen it many times. So if it is the same, then it may have had some sort of military use? Cheers, Jon

Yes it's still used it's the "broad arrow" all army kit is marked with it. I think it dates back to the 17th century with the first board of ordnance.
But as to what it is? no idea I'm afraid because as I say all military kit has the mark which means it could be a part from literally millions of things. I would start at a musket stand and work forward ;)
