Post by: stickygreen on March 05, 2012, 07:41:21 AM I got some new land last week right next to a beach and in 4 hours detecting there i have pulled 4 florins out the ground ,but not silver and about 10 years younger than yours. So silver, i dont think they are rare but not as common as the non silver type.I my field anyway.
Title: Re: are silver florins common? Post by: wayno on March 05, 2012, 08:57:31 AM I would not say they are rare but I have only found 2 in 2 years of detecting. They were used right up to 1993 as 10 new pence. but most of the older ones with silver content were probably collected by coin collectors.
Title: Re: are silver florins common? Post by: Val Beechey on March 05, 2012, 09:07:39 AM Many years ago, ::) I heard that £5 of pre 1947 silver coins could be exchanged at the bank for £10. As I had a shop at the time and cash was the main way of paying, I saved £5 worth and took them in. :(
Once again I have to say 'If only I'd known then what I know now' ::) I think thats prob.where most of the old silver coins went. I have found one in the last year. Val p.s. don't quote me on the 1947 Title: Re: are silver florins common? Post by: db4 on March 05, 2012, 09:30:10 AM Your correct Val about 1947, silver coins from 1920 to 1947 are .500 fine
and prior to 1920 are .925 fine. my florin count for the last 2 years 5 george v 1 edward vii 3 vicky gothics Title: Re: are silver florins common? Post by: peanut on March 05, 2012, 09:58:07 AM I reckon that there might still be a few collectors with some pre 1920 coins out there.
My Dad and I used to collect Vicky bun coins (pennies) and pre-1920 silver coins way back in the 1950's when I were a kid . He has 7x bags of coins weighing six stone 4lbs :o .................. 1000's of coins which I've not yet found time to sort through. Must be one of the biggest collections still in existance I should have thought. I used to love half crowns as a kid . You really felt you had some buying power with a half crown. Never saw a crown though Title: Re: are silver florins common? Post by: dances with badgers on March 05, 2012, 06:13:35 PM i sold one 18 months ago to a canadian collecter for £160.it had a rare mintage in hamillton.i have only found around 10 last year.should be common on the fields .o find them on the beaches
Title: Re: are silver florins common? Post by: Neil on March 05, 2012, 06:31:12 PM I don't seem to find them very often and consider them a good find to make on a days detecting - obvoiusly prefer the pre 1920 varieties, but silver is silver at the end of the day.
Well done Neil |
