Hi all, found this last weekend - pretty sure it's a steelyard weight, but looking at the ones on UKDFD nearly all of the lead ones are classed as roman. Due to the lack of roman finds in my area is there a chance that it could be medieval or later?

Nice find Trys and yes it is probably Medieval, according to my FLO bi-conical weights are tagged as Roman unless from an archaeological layer which shows otherwise.
There are a few of these "blanket" labellings on dates with finds, which unfortunately makes the PAS database useless as an accurate  research tool.
The Jews (Jaws) Harp is mentioned in the bible, but nearly all on PAS are dated as post medieval and god forbid you would have wanted to use any nails in the Medieval times because according to PAS they didn't have hammers, bronze age....yes, Romans....yes and post Medieval....yes, they must have hammered all those coins with their heads.

Cheers guys, it did give a good signal even at 12" down! It was only my first visit to the farm so hopefully there's more there - i've got a good feeling about this farm! I did find this nice medieval buckle (15th cent according to UKDFD) there too so it would suggest a medieval date to the weight.

I agree with what Chef says. UKDFD states this about items similar to this:

Possibly a steelyard weight, but the identification and dating of lead objects of this general type is very problematic. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.)

In order to keep recorded items of this type together, they are categorised on the database under 'Later Medieval (11th-15thC) » Weights » Lead weights', but this is for convenience only and should not be regarded as an indicator of the actual date of their manufacture.
