Not great picis but about the best I can do. Found 2 of these yesterday and think they may be George 2nd Huh
Got a Nickle signal from both which is strange. Have tested for copper and it was negative so wondered if they could be bronze.
Any idea Geoff or Peter.   Grin  Thanks.

Val

ps. Geoff the iron thingy has been ID by my friend as a tractor connector

Well looking at it I would say your spot on with George II, the metal looks like the typical Georgian copper, but the reason it's giving an odd reading is due to it (I believe) being a counterfeit Half-Guinea (or guinea) thus the crown.

Thanks both for your opinions. I'm inclined to go with the George 2nd One Guinea because of where the laurel wreath reaches in relaion to the edge of the coin and also the shape and position of the crown. Plus there is the very rough shape of something under the crown.
Must admit I didn't think about a forgery. That would explain the unusual signal. Can I assume it would have been made around the same time.??

Oh yes it would of been contemporary, I think that many of the ones we find were thrown away in self disgust when the owner realised they had been duped. I'm not sure what the sentence was trying  to pass these off as real (the making of them was death) but I'm sure it could of involved something rather grizzly.

Nice find Val,I'm fairly sure it's a George 2nd Irish half penny, the something under the crown is likely to be the Irish harp,if it is then it would be copper, although i have found one that I'm sure is a forgery made of bronze but it has a very green colour.

No, Simon, I don't think so. For one thing the crown on mine is much higher. The dead give away (I think) is the position of the head and crown. I only thought about it this afternoon. On every coin I've seen if you look at the head and revolve the coin then whatever is on the other side is the right way up. On this one if you do that then the other side is upside down. Blimey that sounds a bit Irish itself but I'm sure you know what I mean.

There you go Tyna, much more interesting than the real thing. Wouldn't mind one though. Roll Eyes Still, at least it gives an age to the field. There is a Farm House next door that was re-built early 1800's so now I have an idea about the age of the original. Beheading was the punishment for making them. Wonder what they chopped off for using them. Shocked
