Title: Birthday detecting session - 6th August 2012
Post by: Howie114 on August 07, 2012, 08:28:39 AM
Out detecting at a friend's farm in Herefordshire as a detecting treat for my birthday yesterday.  The sun even shone at times (!) although the breeze was actually cold.  The heifers in the field looked in great condition although I had identified my exit routes to the 5 gates and a stile with the presence of a bull after enquiring via text with my friend how 'tame' the bull was and he replied 'I wouldn't trust him!!'  Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Swallows and even Redstarts present meant that all in all I was really enjoying just being back in an area that holds many happy memories for me of times with family that are now only with me in spirit.  Anyway..........found several coins usual Georgians, although an identifiable Irish halfpenny from reverse of coin where harp and HIBERNIA can be seen, found a couple of buttons and a pot leg.  It is the pot leg which I have added as an image here as it appears to be very crudely made from lead and attached to the remnants of an iron container.  Is there any possibility of giving an approximate period that it comes from?  As I think I said in a previous posting one of the key aspects of this hobby for me is the questions it always raises that need to be answered whether from my own research or hopefully the assistance of fellow detectorists!  Thanks.

Hi there, pot legs are hard to date accurately as the design did not change much throughout there manufacture. Yours could date from Circa 13th - 17th century and you will also find that yours is made from bronze, it would have not been made from lead due to its low melting point and been useless as a vessel leg. still a nice find!!  ;) Cheers James

That's a brilliant and only way (in my opinion) to spend ones birthday :D! Mark and I spent Neil's birthday detecting last year and I try and do the same myself. Happy birthday.
