Thanks for all the comments. Been at work all day and then went straight out.

The most important thing about this coin is to consider the significance of the date, not 1287, but.......

today's date Grin Wink

I KNEW IT !!!  Angry Angry Angry Angry
i thought  to myself is peter really trying it on ?? ( thats why i didnt enter it in database)
but clung very slightly to the hope that an incredibly rare coin had been found and that peter was a nice guy....wrong on both accounts  Angry Angry Angry Angry

O.K. peter please tell us :-
a) if there was a cardiff mint for Eddy 1st.
b) and if not where/how you got the reverse legend.

Apologies to all those that were fooled, and well done to everyone who spotted it, especially you kev  Wink

There was in fact no mint in Cardiff at this time, although there was earlier as Geoff spotted - during the reigns of William I, Henry I and then  during the Civil War between Stephen and Matilda in the 11th century.

I produced the picture by using an image editing program, starting with the genuine reverse and then cutting and pasting the other letters from other coins, then smoothing out the edges, and blurring the whole thing slightly so you can't see the joins. I wasn't 100% happy with it, but because most people expect me to be serious I think it worked quite well. Grin

I'll go back to being serious now Roll Eyes
