Looking at the piercing again id say the reverse was suppose to be the side shown, as the piercing on the obv is in a funny place......If you look at Geoff's enhanced photos and compare it to the coin id hes shown, the piercing is carefully done under the cross, I think there would have been another hole on the other side of the cross so it would hang straight........ At this time we see a lot of crosses coming on coins as the Christianity influence grew on the Saxons......

I think it was worn as a emblem of faith with the crosses on show as a item of jewellery?

The design for these coins was taken from late roman examples - with the 'VOT V' or similar on the reverse and the bust right. They must have come across quite a lot of scrappy bronzes - after all the romans to them were only as far away (time wise) as William and Mary.
