Title: The Fightback begins - Committee for the Defence of Metal Detecting
Post by: proconsul on March 19, 2009, 08:48:15 PM
This is to announce the formation of the Committee for the Defence of Metal Detecting. Our aim is to defend our hobby from attacks from the misguided and malevolent anti-metal detecting lobby and to take the fight to the enemy by attacking the people who are attacking us (not physically of course).

We will orchestrate a media and PR campaign and at the end of it the anti-detector lobby will know they've been in a fight.

First on our agenda will be the Time Team. Serious allegations have been made by one of our members about the conduct of this program and we intend to investigate these allegations. Should sufficient evidence arise to support these allegations we will pass the information on to the relevant authorities.

If you have ever taken part in a Time Team program or know someone who has please send me a Personal Message.

What an excellent post & about time too.

We have put up with this for long enough now & It is about time that we fought back as it is only a minority that ruin this great past time of ours but we seem to get tarred with the same brush every time!

Well Done

Burp

honest, law abiding detectorists,by reporting their finds to the PAS,have done more for the archeology of this country than the so called archeologists!..over the last 5 or so years, more historic sites have been uncovered because of the honesty of the people who found "treasure" but reported it to the relevant authorities..than the archies could find on their own....these actions should be recognised by the people who are trying to defame this hobby...it's about time we fought back !!...byron

although i am in agreement sort of with admin. ibelieve we need to fully understand as to what the anti-detectorists lobby are actually against .it may be that they turn directly against us soly because nighthawking.maybe educating them will defend us more than you realise.
ok i will fight for the right to be able to use our metal detectors on any area that does not fall under scheduel or for another reason be unavaiable. if it be land or sand.
these people may hold in high regard their selves but we totally out number the antidetectorists that I am sure of.we could loby against them!!!!!!!
with archs to which they will normally remove topsoils why?
they use geophys a xray type detector ?
why do we locate so many sites and don't get all the recognistion!!! ?
let them know who we are not what hawkers are we are not!!!
we agree with some of their ideas !!
protect sites of interest !!!
when archs are there they should allow use to help locate metal object and place a marker to the spot and not loose valuable finds to the jcb!!
we could list many more good things we each should
we should protect this hobby and educate all outsiders about it

For a  start you include  treasure annual report between 1997-2007  156 treasure cases took place, majority found by metal detectors. Then reports from PAS officers and reports from clubs & fid members to build up a dossier to
fight with. :) :)

I believe that if we dn't act soon then we won't have a hobby. Complacency on our part could lead to the end of metal detecting as a recreational pursuit. Some of the Eastern European immigrants to this country are amazed that we have such an easy going approach to our hobby in this country as they would not be allowed to detect without a permit in their own country. I think the article I read was by a Polish gentleman.

I will support the CDMC in any way I can,and would ask all Detectingwales.com members
to do likewise and spread the message through their local clubs. Its our hobby and we should have the right to pursue it.

Thaks for all your support, chaps. The Time Team investigation is our first project. If you know anyone who can supply us with information please get them either to PM me or contact me at geoff@detectingwales.com.

We need to start spreading a positive image of metal detecting. People know we remove interesting stuff from the soil but do they know about all the rubbish we remove as well? As you all know one of the most common metals we find is lead. Do people know the countryside is strewn with lead? It is a concern amongst doctors nowadays that increasing levels of lead are being found in our bodies and it's just not good for us. A lot of it comes from traffic pollution and similar sources but some of it undoubtedly comes from agricultural crops whose roots are sucking up nutrients from soil which is contaminated with lead.

We need to make the point that a farm that has been detected on has far lower levels of lead in its soil that one that hasn't.

How about getting all the members of your club to bring in the scrap lead they've found, pile it up in a big heap and take a photograph with the members and their detectors around it? We can supply a press release to go with the picture - send both to your local paper and we start to have a much more positive portrayal of metal detectorists.

How many detectorists who use this site know that apart from English Heratige Time Team get the largest funding. This will not be an easy fight. What would happen if the main stream television  companies were approached before a large rally and were invited to film then members of the public would get to see the hobby in a better light ie £10,000 raised for this cause as a direct result of the rally? It was not that long ago that detecting was shown on the One Show in a positive light i bet they would do it again.

not only that Geoff if people all bring lead in the recycle value could go towards costs.

Has any member of the rulers of this country know how much cash , gold, silver, anceint bronze etc; has been brought back in to circulation. The percentage in spendable coins may be low but other precious metal aren't

Who are the overall ruling body, that governs the usage of meatal detecting in this country. i.e what government department? Just wondering if we could write an open letter to this department , asking them if we have their continued support. Any positive response off them (and they would have to give a positive response) would be a nice letter to have in our CDMD portfoilo.

why bother fighting something that's never going to happen. the power's that be will not put a blanket ban on detecting because they know they will be the loser's people will still go detecting but not record item's found which in term mean's flo's will lose their job's and so on. imagine a complete ban all it would take is every club in the country to organise a dig on the same day and it will be chaos for the police. the police dont turn up for at least a week after you report something so how are they going to arrest 30,000 detectorist's all on the same day all over the country. this goverment has more to lose than gain by banning detecting and all because a bunch of old fart's think detecting is wrong.  mike
