Title: Detecting Wales Rally 74 - Matrix 3
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on March 29, 2014, 11:21:59 PM
A bleak and dreary morning could not dampen my enthusiasm for today's rally. Chef promised goodies of an Italian pedigree and I intended holding him to his word. I was sure we could find a suitable lynching tree if the need arose.

7.00 a.m saw a rather tired Nobby complete with pillow and comfort blanket climbing into the blue meanie that is my brand new £200 Peugeot. Shortly after we picked up JCB armed with his 1000 litre coffee flask then it was onwards to the sunny promised land and all that Chef had guaranteed.

Now a little known fact about Detecting Wales is that once a year, for our members amusement and very often bemusement we reenact that fantastic cartoon 'Whacky Racers'. This entails DW organisers followed by a convoy of detectorists trawling through the lanes in search of the parking fields... I know we have a varied membership with members hailing from Wales, England, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Scotland but this morning I was called a variety of names, mostly of an Anglo Saxon origin - all in good humour I may add.... I think.

Once everyone was pointed to the correct fields myself and Chef discussed what we thought might show up today and the general thought was Roman and Medieval - Chef was bang on the money. In no time at all a fresh faced Nobby walked over to myself with a stunning 14th C Seal Matrix absolutely gorgeous and I think a first for the Tonyrefail terror. Shortly after that I managed some medieval of my own in the shape and form of an Elizabethan button. Chef then informed me of a cracking Gold Hammered coin weight found by Outlaw who also later in the day went on to get a brace of Roman coins, a denari and a hammered coin. In no time at all DW's favorite Muppet - Floyd Pepper aka Radnor Bandit approached me sporting his own Roman coin - Radnor Bandit also had a lovely early beehive thimble - something high on my wishlist.

Throughout the morning shouts went out over the fields announcing more Roman coins and artifacts including a couple of Roman brooches from Dawson as well as seven roman coins one being a large lovely condition Follis - that's just greedy  ;) Not to be outdone Nobby came along with his own Follis of equal quality and size as well a spur. I bumped into Kernal custard who had a hammered Charles 1st as well as his own roman coins. Colin came across at that point and showed of his huge pot leg, a William coin and a roman coin he seemed happy. Landyman weighed in with a cut half and a Mary groat and speaking to Anthony James shortly after, he showed me his Scottish hammy and a roman. Victor found the third roman brooch of the day and his mate Antiqueboy as always full of smiles was armed with a Jetton (one of many today) a spectacle buckle (again one of many today) and a Heraldic pendant - stunning!

SAS head guy Ferret had a lovey pendant of his own as well as a hammered coin, I believe Ferret went on to have some roman coinage as well. Our very own Cornish compatriot - Villain had what was to be Seal matrix number two of the day and within minutes of seeing that old Golden Salty veins DWB himself walked over showing off Seal matrix number three as well a stealing some of us land lubbers medieval silver and sporting his 1st, 2nd and 3rd ever Roman coins - he should not be encouraged. Last lot that I can remember easily was Doug turner, he had a nice Jetton a dogs head button and a lovely buckle. Later on the field and after three attempts at a roman but to no avail, Hoover G showed me a collection of finds (including a Roman) that showed how hard he detected today, he had stacks of finds - very impressive fella fair play.

There is so much that I've missed out and that only goes to show how busy a day we had for 35 members. I know there is plenty of hammered in the photos and loads more romans as well as a plethora of artifacts, buckles, mount of all descriptions and coinage - Please feel free to shout out if you see your finds not named.

Last going off i spoke to the farmer and he is only too happy to have us return Sunday coming, this will be restricted as he is not keen on too many vehicles so car share will be essential.

Many thanks to Chef for checking out the land and meeting the farmer, Nobby and JCB for all the help this morning and Deadlock for taking a tump of photos and sending them on to me tonight, well done guys!

See you next week guys, its been a blast!

Nice one Neil it was certainly the oddest find of the day as far as being out of place that's for sure and I think it'll be a good while until I see another one of those turning up, a lovely find ;)

Great report Taff, for me I think it was one of the best DW's rallies so far as far as the variety of finds were concerned and also some really interesting artefacts and on the whole in pretty good condition too.
A mixed day for me emotionally, relief after just a hour with Nobby finding his Medieval seal matrix and then his Follis together with Outlaws Noble coin weight which proved my suspicions of the site but personally I had to wait until the 11th hour until I found anything remotely coin shaped myself and it came in the shape of a (worn) Lizzy threepence rapidly followed by George II farthing.
I think I saw 4 seal matrix in total with a possible 5th which is just weird for any site, not sure of the hammy total but while not earth shattering it was quite respectable and feel that next week could be just as productive.
Many thanks for all who came and added to a brilliant day ;)

I did enjoy reading that report Rob. Well done indeed on putting it together so quickly, when you must have been very tired after a long day.

I think a great deal of thanks must go to those who helped make the day such a success. Without such back up support, the DW rallies simply couldn't function. Well done everyone, and of course well done to those who found items of interest.

Hopefully see you next week.

Cheers and happy hunting

Thanks for a great day out, especially on the best rally site ever ,
here are my best of the day.
A approx date for the beehive thimble would be appreciated please.
Also any ideas on the figure, it looks like a mount of some type, possibly a maddona but she's holding two babies

One small gripe / observation.
COULD THE INCONSIDIRATE BAS***D, HAVE FILLED THEIR HOLES IN ?!!
THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST FARMS I HAVE EVER DETECTED AND THE YOUR ACTIONS COULD JEPORDIZE OUR INVITATION BACK FOR FUTURE RALLIES.
(and relax rant over)

Yip, I agree Ian, there were a lot of holes left unfilled. Look guys, even on stubble, as I always put in the directions email - we need to fill our holes in. How do we know that the farmers kids haven't got horses, they could easily snap a leg in an unfilled hole - aside from that, its not our farm, its the farmers and as such we respect other peoples property at all times.

ps Nice William Mary half penny Ian

Been workin since returning and havent had time to clean my coins, especially the denarius  ;D

I would like to add that it was a great rally the atmosphere was electric, the finds were there and quite a range through different periods.

A very large thank you to all  the organisers in DW.

And Chef, last couple of hours put down Deus, brought out your new head phones and se pro, lowered the sensitivity due to the ground noises and bang found the roman coins.

Thank you a very happy Outlaw ;D ;D, looking forward to next week, told  er in dors having to work next sunday with an early start  ;)

Here you go Ian, they aren't babies well only in the sense of "wow! look at those babies" ;D ;D Sorry ladies :-\
I could only find one on PAS and interestingly it was also found in Somerset so of local manufacture I would think;

(http://finds.org.uk/images/thumbnails/417907.jpg)<acronym title="The Portable Antiquities Scheme">PAS</acronym> record number: SOM-A45D85

Object type: Spoon

Broadperiod: Medieval

County of discovery: Somerset

Stable url: <a href="http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/544506" title="SOM-A45D85: a Medieval Spoon">http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/544506 (http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/544506)[/url]

Possibly a lot earlier than I thought in which case the condition is very impressive  for pewter ;)

Thanks Geoff, - she must have taken big breaths  ;D ;D
Its most be likely a local maker, as the side profile is exactly the same, and as the preservation is good I assumed it was a copper alloy rather than pewter.

Thank you Alan, from the size and style of the one I found, it looks like a very early one.

Great rally I had to work that saturday, knew it would be a good un.

It is a pity that some spoil it for the rest of us by not filling in their holes if you can't bother filling them in then don't bother digging them, take up fishing or something else.I had a farmer stop me detecting on his land because of a dectorist leaving hole all over his  fields, when I told him that I fill all my holes in he said if I stop one then I have to stop you all,so i had to suffer because of one selfish person. So don't let DW and its great members down by being selfish and FILL in your holes. >:(

Thanks to all at DW who put on a fantastic rally !!!! Great weather and fields and a very friendly bunch of people to detect with  :) It was well worth the trip up from Plymouth for my bro (Frosty Searcher)and myself ! Although we managed to miss the hammies and romans it was great to see them coming up . We did manage to find a few modern coins - george V 1915 shilling and 1917 penny . Sandy found a 1666 bridgewater farthing trading token . I had nothing but lead all day and then with the last two digs of the day i had a nice 1795 Bristol half penny trade token and a bent medieval jeton ! We had a few other bits and pieces and to top the day off my first granddaughter was born at 10pm that night  ;D Thanks again guys and looking forward to our next meeting !!!

Well done Jaff and your bro, sorry about the 'Roman' button, good laugh though. Hope we will see you both again. AJ
PS: For those who are not aware of the 'Roman' button incident, this what happened, I was searching near to Jaff  and he had not made any 'good' results at the time, so; I get a good signal, dig it and see what I thought was a small roman coin, so I covered it over quickly and called Jaff over telling him he could have what was where I indicated telling him it looked like a roman coin,(trouble is I should have looked first then there wouldn't have been any disappointment). He dug, searched and eventually found it with the help of the Pro pointer, sadly when he turned it over it was a small button. That's the trouble when you get old, but a good laugh anyway.

Well with only around 30 attendees this last time we will be able to spot the culprits easily enough next time...  just have to put my sherlock holmes hat on ;)

Come on guys, respect the farmers property and don't spoil it for others in the future  - FILL YOUR HOLES, also to echo Neil's comment which I thought was a great quote :  GRASS IS GREEN SIDE UP, it's not hard.

Leaving holes is akin to leaving dog poo on the pavement in my books DONT DO IT ! It gives us all a bad reputation. We will find you...

I kept finding signals left behind in dug holes a ft long pipe and tap had too be escorted off the field on 1 occasion as it was weighing me down. I did notice the guy who was doing this and followed afew holes he dug to be certain then I had a signal looked up and he was nowhere to be seen. I will have my shoulder camera on Sunday to capture this if it happens again and the video will be posted up on here just to warn you that's all..
