Interesting find.

L&Y could be Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway - are you in that part of the world?

Hi Matthew, If youre so intent on getting a definite I.D. give this Forum a go. They have a section 'RAILWAYANA' that you post your question and pici.
There are other Forums besides this one but this looks the best.

It may be a plaque off an old steam water pump, 1831 is a early for a train, did you find it near a river, stream or lake?

I found a lovely solid copper top off goodness knows what in a field along-side the railway track. When I washed it I found GWR stamped on the top.
That could have been there from when the railway was laid in 1841. Always nice to find bits like that, they've got some history.

Depending on the date it could well be a steam water pump plaque, do some research on old companies and also if there were any water pumps in that area also researching the river itself, this will put you on the right track. I bought one of these type of plaques a few years back from a boot sale for a quid and it it was worth a few pennies more than that. If it is off a train it will be worth a lot of money especially if you can identify what loco it came off.

Good luck

Hi Matt, just been looking at your plaque again and a thought occurred to me (dangerous) Do you think the NorthWest 'W'co   could be WATER.  Canals were big business back in the 1800's
Had a very quick look on line and came up with this

 https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:ffvUr8srylwJ:www.waterscape.com/media/documents/versioned/winter_stoppages_09/Contact_details.pdf+north+west+waterways+co.&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESiyG1B9cqkg_x-g7qO2qj9QwN9tKy5O4akAKTDof7xEMIH_EaECOZuVlbNRrW26NnaRlxaBkxz9qjXBDlan1dzk7TyTs4L0lMa8jpNWxwzswPSj4mNWMvv5CU1EsQsBrVWT5RZp&sig=AHIEtbSOgYapp-JveO2xJm0QbOS0LxAdKg

Look at No.2 on right hand side.  Might be worth a look.
