Posting this on behalf of a friend trying to get a positive id, can anyone offer any suggestions

greek maybe?

The coin is 25mm and bronze

Well first impressions would say a classic Celtic bronze unit. But you could be right with Greek as all the Iron age coins were copied from theirs.

  WELL i certainly like this era this one is  from the KINGDOM OF NUMIDIA  148BC to 118BC laureate and bearded head left horse galloping left but i will have another look around as there are quite a few from this kingdom with similar reverses

 please could i have some opinions on whether the coin in question has any writing on it thankyou

  yep that is a big worry as if there is writing then i have the wrong link as there doesnt seem to be any legend on these coins BOO HOO BOOHOO the jury is out until we can get confirmation of any legend

i can confirm that there is no legend on the coin, i wont be able to take better pictures as i dont have the coin, but i did take the pictures myself so deffo no legend.

   not a detector find oh why does that happen sometimes do people buy them in then??? i can see the soil I THINK on the reverse or is that put there to try and make it look authentic

Sorry - didn't mean to cause offence.

Because ecopain didn't say in the original post that it was a detecting find, I was assuming wrongly that it was from a collection or another source.

It is a very unusual detector find in the UK, although the period it dates from is similar to that of many Roman Republican silver coins that turn up and were still in circulation 100-200 years later.

Was it an isolated find or, for example, on a Roman site?

Or it could have been lost a lot more recently, maybe by a collector?
