Title: What is it?
Post by: kevinmansfield on November 28, 2014, 02:32:08 PM
Hullo,

I found this little chunky round bronze something yesterday. It's about 8mm wide and quite thick. It's really small so it's difficult to get a decent picture, it's blank on one side but the other side there's a picture of somebody holding a shield and a sword on a boat.

I have found a few Roman bits and pieces in the same field.

Cheers, Kevin.

It is a coin weight.

Nice find as Doug says it's a coin weight to measure a gold Noble (or fraction thereof) ;)

Nice one! Thanks folks. Flippin' shame they didn't drop the gold noble instead though!

Any idea of date?

Ummm? Well it can't be any later than 1465 as the Angel was introduced to replace it and no earlier than 1344 when it was first issued ;)

It seems Geoff and Doug are right about it being a coin weight and in my experience of coin weights ,is that markets or similar, are close by with traders weighing the coins to make sure that they not forgeries or lightened  :)

With the rose on the ship it would make it a Ryal (Rose Noble) 1464-1470...... The more I look at it, it looks like im looking down a cannon and the rose is between the kings teeth ::) :D
