Title: Cardiff SCAN Rally - Chepstow 5th September 2010
Post by: Neil on September 05, 2010, 04:52:40 PM
I am sure an official report will follow later from Karl or Peter, but heres my two hammered pennies worth.

I arrived late due to a late night in Cardiff, but thankfully I stopped drinking early. I knew I wouldn't be able to make the DW one and was gutted but thats life, and I feel we should equally support our clubs. About 15 hardy SCAN souls braved the elements and turned up in Chepstow on a farm that has previously treated SCAN well with Roman and Medieval finds.

My first find of note after about half an hour was a Roman bronze coin at only a few inches depth. Despite griding the area for a good 20 inutes nothing else decided to show itself as soon as I headed in another direction I hit another Roman coin and then to top it a tiny Roman minim.

Then the heavens decided to empty so I trotted back to the car to find a soggy Salty sporting at a guess a Tudor Groat that had been cut in half.

Other finds of note I saw included Stans Lt Tenne brooch - a nice early one, theat should clean up okay and Alberts William III sixpence or was it a shilling - can't remember.

I only spoke to a few people but everyone including myself had a mix of lead bag seals, buttons, broken Georgian and Medieval buckles (gutted at two of mine!  >:(} and musket balls.

I headed home about twoish to a Sunday roast and a bottle of rioja.

A big thank you to Karl, Tom and the rest of the guys and girls that make SCAN rallies happen - I for one thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I also enjoyed watching Maxine and Debbie slip sliding their way out of the field in their Landy. I wasn't laughing quite so hard when I tried it in mine!  ;) It was great fun though! ;)

A wet, muddy and enjoyable day looking for our ancestors - what more could you ask for?

Cheers
Neil

Yes Neil - it sure is one of those strange sensations when the steering wheel is turned to the right and the Landy still travels in the original forward direction ftp://
Great fun though ..... ;D

A nice day out - great bunch of guys and girls on the rally.  Dug up a number of bits and bobs - my best find was a patterned pewter button.
