Title: What do you use on the beach
Post by: Terra (Mike) on August 24, 2009, 10:40:47 AM
I am having a bit of a debate with my mate from Bristol over which is the best way to uncover finds on the beach .

He prefers to use his knee length sand scoop, whilst i go for spade and pinpointer, he does seem to get more modern coins on loose sand , whilst my method is better on wet or compact sand, my point is that i find my method more universal, ok digging out loose is hard work , but digging deep on compact sand with a scoop in near impossible , and if there are pebbles buried , forget it,,,,,, by the way we both use Ace 250s, so the detection rate is similar., what do you prefer and do you have any tips.

2 X Daiwa Beachcasters, 2 X 7HT's, Lugworm/Squid this time of year  ;)  ;)  ;)

No really, I normally take my little Trenching Shovel & my Whites MXT but I normally only detect beaches when I go on holiday Ihelps pay for the parking)!

I thought about going to WSM but not to sure now since the Peir burned down  :'(

Few years ago i made a sand scoop out of a green plastic Petrol can i made the general scoop shape with an angle grinder then drilled 100.s of holes from the inside so the sand would fall out easier.but only got chance to use it beginning of the year.
picking up a scoops full of little pebbles got on my wick and you still had to sieve through them to find the coins.

I stick to a light weight spade now and its handy to know where you been by dragging the spade behind you !
One kid asked me once... was a making out a football pitch lol

Hi Mike, i find it better using a small shovel, can't get use to them sand scoops, and i find the Garrett 150 is great on the beach, thats what i use, just need to drop sensitivity a bit on the wet stuff.  ;)

take my normal spade for the wet sand and use my foot  -side to side sweeping movement for the dry sand, not normall to deep n the dry.

Same as Tafflaff - spade on wet sand and just push the dry sand away with my foot. Scoops difficult to use on the wet sand - as said above, gravel and pebbles can be a problem and they can block.

I was watching a video , where the guy was using a scoop in 2 ft of water at the shoreline (low tide.)  Really coming up with the goodies he was.
