Title: Slave Manilla . . .
Post by: Neil on December 14, 2009, 11:47:49 PM
I purchased this a few years ago, but they do turn up quite often as detector finds in The Vale - I know Jeff Stock (DW member) has found three of them.

Its an African form of currency that was known as a Manilla. Each bronze manilla would be worth one slave. The one I have is slightly smaller than normal so would represent a female or teenage boy. You can get really small one which are literally for the purchase of a child. Very sad.

A very poinient piece. If you go down to Mermaids Quay in Cardiff theres a 12 foot wide one, which reminds us that at one time Cardiff was a centre for importing African slaves into the UK.

A sobering thought.
