Title: Heraldic mount?
Post by: Techony on June 10, 2012, 03:47:56 PM
Hi Peter,

In an extraordinary turn of events, the hammie tap has been turned off and a slow trickle of regular finds is starting to re-emerge up this neck of the woods  ;D

In amongst the bullets, nails, foil, muskies, tombacs and spindle whorls this weekend, was this wee little shield thing about an inch heigh but with the image of a lion/dragon/griffin rampant embossed and gilded. it is almost as though it was meant as some form of seal type matrix except that there is no inscription.

I would appreciate your views as to whether it is just a plain old heraldic mount or do you think it may have had another purpose. I also can't make out what it is on the flatter side, any ideas???

Thanks,
