Title: Another foreign hammered for ID
Post by: trys on March 05, 2009, 12:01:06 PM
Hey all, only a week after I found the continental sterling of Gaucher De Chatillon, Count Of Porcein another one pops up in the same field, but this time I dont think it's the same type of sterling. Can anyone please help with ID cos I haven't got a clue! Sorry for the rubbish pictures.

That's a nice one Trys, those sterlings seem to be becoming quite popular with collectors. I'm sure Peter will enjoy i.d.ing that one!
Just out of interest what type of site are they coming up on, the only ones I have found (total of 2) came up on a field next to a welsh church?

Hi Hedgehog, that's a bit of a coincidence....both have come up next to an old medieval church!!! i've also had a couple of cut halves from the same field. Possible market site i'm thinking?!

Up until recent times churches were THE meeting places to catch up on news , what was happening in the country, even at one point people were required by law to practice their archery skills once a week and were in trouble if they didn't!
Only the more genteel people were able to read and of course the clergy, so maybe these fields were focal points for meeting up and catching up and I am sure the entrepreneurs amongst them would have been selling or bartering there wares (car boots!), because you could be sure of a captive audience every sunday.,

Just seen your post on ukdn
It's Edward I Bury St. Edmunds class 3, moneyer Robert de Hadeleie and a rare find.............................
