Title: Re: early coin weight Post by: Neil on March 19, 2010, 05:28:50 PM Thats a beauty Mick. I got a feeling the raised had is a protestant symbol. Its till used in Northern Ireland by the protestant factions in political flags, etc. Glasgow Rangers fans often put it on a Union Jack known as the red hand of Ulster. Why they bother is beyond me.
Don't know if that helps at all. Nice find mate Neil Title: Re: early coin weight Post by: The Doc on March 19, 2010, 06:10:39 PM Great find. Sorry to crush your theory Neil, but the hand symbol indicates it was made in Antwerp. It's a weight for the french Ecu au Soleil, or Zonnekroon in Dutch if you prefer).
The ecu au soleil was struck between 1475 and 1654. Title: Re: early coin weight Post by: sandpiper on March 19, 2010, 06:19:13 PM hi micky
Superb find ;D cracking condition, it may be a coin weight for the french gold coin ,ecu au soleil, sun in shield 1475 ,made in antwerp - an antwerp hand coin weight .theres a good list of coin weights on the colchester metal detecting web site and the uk finds data base .Its a museum quality find in rare superb condition -well done Title: Re: early coin weight Post by: mickycoin "mick" on March 19, 2010, 06:27:58 PM thanks peter for another great id, thanks also sandpiper for the other info, last but not least, neil i could see where you were coming from mickycoin mick ;D ;D

Title: Re: early coin weight Post by: handyman [Alan} on March 27, 2010, 09:38:32 AM good news
i've now had info back from the FLo re the coin weight that i found. it is confirmed as 'a cast copper alloy Aureus coin weight 10.54g'. Defined as a cube matrix, or cube weight. The clasped hands motif is explained as representing COS III. the date of the artefact is put at 200AD. a lovely object, to take pride of place in my collection. cheers Title: Re: early coin weight Post by: dragonsbreath(Paul) on March 27, 2010, 10:06:42 AM A pride of place find Alan....well done indeed...PaulB. 8)
