Title: 1 Hour on a new Permission
Post by: Goldpanner on September 06, 2013, 04:15:26 PM
Ive been in my area for around 8 years but havent touched a detector due to Ill health and disability.
Now a lot better I wanted to test the water so posted out 20 letters to local Farms. Received 6, No sorry, letters
BUT I 'give me a bell' letter and 2 phone calls promising me access after the shooting season finishes in Feb.
So this morning I went and saw the farmer and got one field of about 80 acres. Its in stubble. but had a ploughed strip about 20 foot wide down the middle.
Got the E Trac out and had a wander. LOADS of junk within 20 foot of the gate but up onto the thin ploughed strip, peace at last.
Doing my research later found that there was some sort of old Huntin lodge there in the 1800's and 1900' and it dissapears from the maps in the 60's.
Anyways, had a nice hour amidst the rain showers and pulled out a Roman Bronze. Bit grotty but Im happy for it to join its friends in the dispaly cabinet.
So first find from a new permission 5 mins from my house. So I know theres Roman around, well its quite close to a known area. Am I chuffed ??

Good start to hopefully a long detecting future ahead of you. Whereabouts are you located? If its near me, your welcome to pop out with me on my of my areas sometime for a wander of the magic stick.

Ive actually got a very nice coin collection from over 40 years of detecting but every now and again I give a lot to Schools in a small display unit.
The artifacts and rarities always go to the Museums, with a full description of context and GPS positions.
My new site has some rather spectacular possibilities.

Ducked out for a quick half an hour early this morning
This popped up. I searched so hard to find the broken bit but no such luck.
Sorry about the condition, I had greasy fingers, I'll clean it up later. I have orders from SWMBO to sort the camper out !!
Came from around 3 inches down very loose soil, no context.
Pic taken with Veho USB Microscope.

The first roman is a billon ant of Gallienus, probably Salus reverse, second one is a siliqua of Julian. If you are getting siliqua it's going to be a good site :-)

That's something I've not found yet,and is certainly very high up my list....
