Title: Here It Is
Post by: celticspikey on July 08, 2014, 10:13:00 PM
Hope it was worth the wait I love it. :) I think I have identified it but would welcome your input ;) Oh found 8 inches on set a side field full of flint, on a roman site (never had hammered or Saxon here before) with my trusty Deus ;) ;) ;) first two photos are prior to a clean, with soapy water.

Thanks for your comments, it amazes me when a coin of this quality/ condition comes up from a heavily flinty field , this field was only ploughed last year so I guess it has recently been brought up from the depths :o my thanks must go to the tractor driver for doing that :-* :-* ;)

Hi Paul.   Geoffs' link to the Auction site mentions that the coin pictured is only the 4th one known and each of them was struck with a different dye.  Very Rare.

So I reckon that makes yours No.5.  ;)       It only mentions the starting bid, would love to know how much it fetched at the end of bidding.   Looks like Geoff was right,  'That's the holiday paid for'.  ;D

Val

p.s.  Just reading the lineage, makes it all the more fantastic.  He was the Grand Father of Alfred the Great. WOW what a find.

No Val that applies to the moneyer Bosa, Pauls is from Winchester by the moneyer Wihtnoth and is only the 4th known ;) Paul I would telephone Spinks if anyone.

Thanks for that Geoff, I rang timeline there coin had an estimate of £3000-£4000 and a reserve of £2800 which was not met. It looks like mine is in better condition I think.  :-\ I have e/ mailed pictures to them just to see what they say. Thanks Val for your comments ;)

Yes yours is in far better nick than either of those, for me it's interesting that Spink question whether they were actually minted at Winchester and given that the other two with known provenance were found in Warminster and nr Salisbury now yours being found not a million miles away may point to a closer mint ???

I'd certainly agree with Chef that your coin is much nicer than the one sold at Spinks. Personally I'd want to keep it, but then I keep all the Viccy Pennies I find too!

Sorry Guys. You must excuse my ignorance in these matters. As I've yet to find a Hammered coin of any sort it's not yet one of my in  depth interests. ::) :'( :-*

What a great find Paul, stunning mate as you said with all the flint in the ground its lucky its not damaged, the Saxon penny's can be so brittle. :)

Great id Geoff and some good links you've put up, and information about the mint it makes sence ;) looking at the other coin on the Spink link, Pauls is far better has to be the finest known example, the way rare Saxon penny's are selling at the moment its going to do very well ;)

Well done  ;)

Thanks for that Paul. Research can be as addictive as swinging. Unfortunately that's the most likely culprit for my present predicament.

But I will be out there again and one of these days I will find one.

Val
