Where am I?

« on: November 08, 2015, 09:21:35 AM »

Had a swing on Tuesday just gone. Within in minutes I got a crystal clear cracker of a signal. Anyway I dug down about 6" and nothing, had a poke about with my probe and still nothing, went over again with the detector and the same signal. Carry on digging I thought and about 18" down, I could see the circular outline of what I guessed was some sort of vessel. My heart missed several beats. I had to widen the hole quite a bit to start clearing around the rim with my trowel, I had quite a few fragments from inside the rim, and the out came the base which is about 2" in diameter. It took me a good one and half hours to free the rim which is about 7" diameter. I held it in my hands and could see quite a lot of detail on it and my guess was that it got to be Roman. Alas there was nothing in it but it will go down as my best find to date. For some reason it was buried up side down and over the passage of time, the majority of the bowl has disintigrated and the base had dropped down into the center of the rim. The same pattern is on the fragments that I managed to save. Hope you like it as much as I do.

That is a very nice find. Roman ?  could be but the pattern on it looks a bit un-Roman, if you know what I mean.
Just had a quick look on everyones favourite search and found the attached.  The rim looks alike. Now if it came out of the same field that you found the coins, then maybe ?? Roll Eyes

Thanks Val. Sent the pictures to Mark Lodwick and he says Roman. Taking it up to him next week. Now as for the same field as the coins, well that would be telling would'nt it  Wink Wink
