Oh dear. Naughty Naughty. Though there is a 3rd possibility......moles tunnelling from bulgaria, stopped off for a quick portrait in france hence the blue felt pen and upon entering the uk entered into plastics factory. Then when escaping the uk border force suffocated in a field with all there lost treasures!!!!!! Cant believe they never thought of that.

i think theres a little more to this than we have read.  i know allison the finder of the brooch and dont think for one vminute she's trying it on if anything it was planted by the rally organisers because the only item's being found on that rally was bullets and everyone was complaining

People looking for a fast buck are beginning to see the popularity of the hobby with possibly hundreds of people attending a big event in a
supposedly good location. As has been mentioned, there's big money on the line here.
How many farmers claim thier land is undetected and when you go there its obvious after the first half hour, its been done to death, 'Money"...

I've found at club level, organisers are loath to accuse anybody of cheating by bringing finds to rallies as its too much hassle to prove.
Shame really, as it spoils it for everybody who's worked hard all day and reports back with what they've genuinly found, only to have the FOR
taken by someone who brought the item to the event.

the field where the staffs hoard was found had been done to death by previous searchers and the owner said they were wasting their time....

It works both ways as well mind.

On one of out rallies, someone found 3 paper coin envelopes in an already dug hole, (picked up the staples in the paper apparently )

Now that could have been taken 2 ways, either someone had fetched coins with them to get the Kudos of having finds or it could have been thought that we as organisers had buried them to make the rally look good

There is a third reason, say a gold hammered coin hoard was found and the finder wanted to launder them into single coin finds, rallies are a good place to do this as it gives the coin a new providence with plenty of witnesses. I'd hope the latter reason is a rarity and true detectorists would do the correct (and legal) thing.

A friend of mine was at the rally and witnessed David Williams pointing out the felt tip marks to the finder. He said that the finder of that particular brooch had supposedly found three other nice roman articles. He thought it odd when most others on the day were struggling to find just a grot.
