Lead figure of a man I washed it with a toothbrush carefully removed all of the loose Muck as you can see my question is is it hard compact muck on it or natural build up from the lead any help how to clean it please

Nice find Mark I would say it's too far gone for home restoration with the remaining crud being lead oxide rather than mud so it's part of the piece though if it's a calcium build up from the clay then it could be removed with the right chemicals and you should be able to tell this if other finds have a similar coating, regardless of metal type.
I'm not sure why but these figures are quite tightly dated to between 1400 and 1500 and thought to be representations of the apostles Wink

Hi Mark,thought you may also consider removal of "crud" by using a cocktail stick and very gently picking away at the stuff,its strange that you asked the question as I had only just finished watching a guy in the States demonstrating the cleaning of artifacts with this method.
And Chef,this was in no way put up to countermind your initial cleaning suggestion,it was that i had just watched this guy on  U-tube.👍
