Title: First Trip out with the Deus, nice hammered Post by: hotmill on March 01, 2013, 03:20:58 PM Well what can I say. First trip out with the XP Deus and I decided to go over a field of mine that I have searched a few times before and have recovered most of the larger/easier targets with my Garrett AT Pro. I decided to just use the headphones so I could concentrate on the tones rather than looking at the display as well. Found it a bit difficult at first deciphering what the tones where telling me but after a few hours and a few programme changes started to get the hang of it. Wow! It certainly picks up a lot smaller targets at depth and I have ended up with coins, partifacts etc.
Managed to find this hammered Scottish penny so will be back in there as soon as I have a chance. The wireless is a godsend and it's a pleasure to carry around as it's so light, I did around six hours yesterday and not one twinge from my hand. Think it's going to be a good machine for me :) Title: Re: First Trip out with the Deus, nice hammered Post by: WeCan-Octavian on March 01, 2013, 04:49:45 PM what a cracker well done

It's a St Andrew's mint penny of John Balliol. Pretty scarce, but I'm afraid you have probably severely reduced any value it may have had to a collector by the spit and foil treatment :'( Title: Re: First Trip out with the Deus, nice hammered Post by: hotmill on March 01, 2013, 11:51:00 PM Well found. Title: Re: First Trip out with the Deus, nice hammered Post by: probono on March 02, 2013, 09:20:58 PM I was going to ask how The Doc could read the mint signature - I'd got as far a John Balliol - I had thought that all Scottish coins of this period just had 'Rex Scotorum' on the reverse (and I couldn't see the number of points on the mullets) - but apparently St Andrews signed their mint signature CIVITAS SAN DRE - and you can see the 'N' from this - and there isn't an 'N' in Rex Scotorum. Nice coin - depending on exactly which issue (is it 1st) it booked at ~£150 in fine in Coins of Scotland and Ireland (2003 ed), but (whilst you can do things about it) it has been foiled.....
I've got a bit of a soft spot for St Andrews myself as that's where my wife decided she was going to go out with me rather than her fiancee..... :) Title: Re: First Trip out with the Deus, nice hammered Post by: The Doc on March 03, 2013, 01:35:33 PM I was going to ask how The Doc could read the mint signature - I'd got as far a John Balliol - I had thought that all Scottish coins of this period just had 'Rex Scotorum' on the reverse (and I couldn't see the number of points on the mullets) - but apparently St Andrews signed their mint signature CIVITAS SAN DRE - and you can see the 'N' from this - and there isn't an 'N' in Rex Scotorum. I've got a bit of a soft spot for St Andrews myself as that's where my wife decided she was going to go out with me rather than her fiancee..... :) Sorry Roland (and others). I guess I have become a bit lazy and don't tend to explain how I reach an ID. I will try and say a bit more in future. Several years ago I did a series on hammered ID's, posting a coin, seeing who could ID it and then adding explanations. Here is an example, with the image re-added because the pics have been deleted from all these old threads. If there's enough interest, I will revive a few more, or even try some new ones. http://www.detectingwales.com/index.php?topic=3648.0 (http://www.detectingwales.com/index.php?topic=3648.0) Title: Re: First Trip out with the Deus, nice hammered Post by: probono on March 03, 2013, 07:35:21 PM I'm getting there on the 'normal' hammered - after all I'm more of a romanist :) - but as I don't see tht much Scotish then I don't get chance to look it up much (I've got the book...) - It's always useful (not just to me) to see how you (or I or anyone else) has identified a coin - after all at some point we (I) wouldn't have been able to identify something (and there are plently of coins / items I still can't) - it's only by practice and having things pointed out that we get better - I've found recently that finding something (like groats or somesuch) makes me go and learn more about them....... :) I just need to find some more things ;D
