Title: do they do it ?
Post by: Kev on May 30, 2009, 10:08:51 AM
this is a bit of a tongue in cheek one  :P ::) ::) iv always wondered that on rallies over the years and all over  the country do people bring coins or things what they have got at home to bring to rallies to make out they have been found at rallies, to make out they have been found there on that day just to look good  ::) ::) ??? :-\ : ??? ::) what do the members think on this topic  :-\

It do go on a lot, and i have witnessed it casa, a guy i used to go out with used to do it mate,  we were on swansea beach one time 4 of us,  3 of us had lots of finds, the other one hardly anything,  he was ages trying to get us to pack in,
then he said lets have another 15 mins,  when he saw all our stuff, yeah iv'e seen it before,
after half hr he came back with a smile on his face and pulled out of his pocket a load of pre, dec coppers,   they still had the dried dirt on them too from the fields  lol
and that is only one time with him lol,  the idiot,

I think it's quite sad when they feel the need to pretend they have found something, must be lonely people.
I know one guy who buries finds at rallies (and elsewhere) (not DW) and they have ended up in the detecting magazines.
He makes little items out of gold sometimes and did bury one of his quarter staters at one of the rallies, I don't like that!

yeah i think i know that one, for a lot of the overseas detectorist too when there is not much there to be found,

another guy iv'e said before is well known for it around the rallies,  if you have got Mike Pegs first film " down to earth with Mike Peg,"  you'll see him on there,  about half way through, i think just before me,
he's just come up from a stream after washing his roman brooches and coins off he'd found,  lol,  as if you'd do that  hey,  but it would explain the lack of soil stuck to them, lol

I was once on a ralley and that guy was there,  so was a new couple to the hobby i'd met before,  they said he'd been showing them some nice roman coins he'd found that day, hmmmmm,
anyhow, we spotted him digging a hole and was glancing around, i said go over to him, i'll follow, as they got there he pulled up his hand and was showing them something so i went to see as well, they said ohhhh  look at this lovely silver coin he's just found, and handed it to me, i went to pull the mud lump off and he said go on take it off.
well well, it came off as clean as a wistle,  the coin underneath was very clean as well,  the bottom of the lump was realy flat and smooth, all round in fact,
now you'd know as well as me if that was a genuine find then it wouldn't have come off so clean, it would have been stuck tight to the coin and little moutains of muck would have been on both,

It goes on. Its too predictable. I'm going detecting tomorrow and I'm going to find a Hadrian denarius...now if only I could remember where I put the damn thing!

If there was a cash prize or prize of some kind , then I could understand why they do it , (not condone it) but what the hell have they got to gain ? I just cannot understand it.

they just want to make themselves look a lot better than they actually are i think, then there is to try and save face if they haven't found much,  they may want to bring a lot of attention upon themsleves for people to think their good,
,
they used to do it to win prizes at rallies untill people twigged what was going on and stopped it. the prizes that is,
