Title: Small bell for id please Post by: Old Pete on October 27, 2014, 10:08:39 PM Hi, went out to a new field over the weekend and found a lot of modern junk as well as a few decimal coins but I also found a small crotal bell. It's quite small at 16mm diameter and 20mm high including the loop. Could it possibly be a hawking bell and does anyone have any idea of it's age?

I doubt it's a hawking bell as because hawking was the sole preserve of the wealthy the bells are inevitably silver so I think it's probably a horse pendant bell and old, most bells you'll see as finds are mainly 18th and 19thC horse harness bells from working horses but the loop on yours looks medieval. ;)

Although all the fields on my permission have been extensively ploughed and cultivated and show no features whatsoever, there are fields around them that still have signs of ridge and furrow so I was hoping for something a little older.
