Found this one last week, a charles 1st double rose halfpenny? it has a diameter of 3mm to 4mm. it got me thinking as to what hammered coin is the smallest ever minted? Has it been clipped to be so small perhaps? good call roughneck ... i,ve checked with a few examples on the PAS site and it suggests a 10mm diameter.for a few similar coins. i,m now able to confirm that you are absolutley spot on with the measurements ... the diameter is indeed 9mm. [that'll teach me to rely on someone else reading the ruler!] also, out this morning, on another field a few miles away, i got a nice charlie halfgroat. So i took the opportunity of photographing them both together, hence the label .... a right pair of Charlies!! thanks again Title: Re: Is this the ....... I remember finding a Chas penny a few years ago - and they are small enough! the signal was crisp and the coin was no more than 2 inches below the surface. Luckily, it had been raining and the ground was quite firm, but sticky. Once the coin had been extracted from the ground, i got down to the smallest bit of mud/dirt and was still getting the signal, but then i noticed the silver edge poking through .... so a quick water dab to remove the mud and there it was .... a double rose! |
