You'll have to load an image up - there are some varieties that are slightly different than just a legion number

Looks like 'The Eagle of the 9th '    Grin Roll Eyes

I had a look and compared the one on the coin to the one found at Silchester and apart from the wings (which they know were repaired)  it's very similar.  Did they actually show the standard of the 9th on any coins. ?

It's a beautiful coin. If I could only ever find one then that would do me.

I don't think there is any evidence that the IX ever lost their eagle Val it's just a book with no real factual basis Wink

I know about the book Geoff but there is a lack of written evidence that they existed beyond Britain, not being mentioned in records again for a very long time and then only briefly.  Who's to know for sure.

Ah but absence of evidence is not evidence of absence and there is some belief that they were transferred to Armenia in 115 and replaced by the VIth Victrix who also came up from Spain but as you say at the moment any theory is as good another.

Hollywood says they were lost in Scotland in at least two films.

If thats good enough for the vexatious blogger with incredibly itchy underpants, then its good enough for me! Wink

What, are you trying to tell me that Hollywood doesn't always make historically correct films. I wont have a word of it!

Lovely find by the way Webber
