As a 14 year old I started detecting my local vicinity with a C-Scope detector that obviously had its limitations. I found coins, cutlery and the inevitable horseshoes and lead in my local fields. Nothing ancient or intersting and nearly every coin was 20 century but I enjoyed it none the less.

Yesterday I detectd those same fields 30 years later, this time armed with a Minelab Quattro. The fields are now subjected to off road motorbikers, a local youth centre and a host of children and adults discarding litter.

Wow! You cannot move for signals! The difference in those pristine fields! Now it is junk, junk, junk!

Until I get the hang of my Quattro Ill be leaving these fields well alone.

Love the detectors. Look like some kind of farming implement!

What machines were available in those days and what were their capabilities, depth etc. Could they hold their own with today's with current technology.

The Arado 90 was thought to be the detector of the day years ago. I had one and not being experienced enough to know how good it really was and sold it fo eight quid.

The bloke that manufactured them did some for the MOD. Apparently they were the only ones then that could find the small bits of metal in plastc mines.
How true this was i don't know. Maybe it was just a sales ploy.
