Ancient Greek coin valued at a cool £2MILLION set for auction

If the Greeks had a few more of these in their coffers their financial troubles could clear up over night.
The world's most expensive ancient coin has emerged for sale - for a cool £2million.
This Greek drachma was first struck 2,418 years ago and has risen in value at nearly £1,000 a year ever since.

Ancient small change: The coin is decorated with a stunning depiction of two eagles clutching a dead hare
Worth big bucks: The obverse of the coin is stamped with the image of a Quadriga, or four horse chariot

Its incredibly detailed engraving shows an eagle on one side and four horses and a chariot being driven by a young man on the other. The silver coin is one of 12 known examples in the world, with six being held in museums.

The piece, that is just over one inch in diametre and weighs 1.5 ounces, was minted in Sicily in the late 5th century BC.

At the time the wealthy cities of Sicily competed with one another over the beauty of the coins they issued and the very best artists of the day were called upon to engrave the dies used to strike them.
It has been in the collection of an anonymous American enthusiast who is now selling it. The sale is said to be one of the most important offerings of ancient Greek coinage in living memory.

The Classical Numismatic Group will auction the coin in New York on January 4.

That is B-E-A-UTIFUL! The skill gone into designing that outdoes any coin of today I say, and so much relief makes it look 3D, stunning! When are we going to Greece for a Rally Smiley
