Is it blowing before or when using, is it one side or both.
If it’s one side when using, take both lamps out and try again, put lamps back, one at a time, if it’s not the bulbs could be the relay, should have a relay for both directions, swap them over and see if the fault changes over.
Otherwise it’s a wiring fault or the control switch on the steering wheel.
Hope this helps, these faults can be a nightmare, try and eliminate one step at a time.

Sounds like a gromets rotted away. Check all the places the O/S indicator wiring passes through the bodywork, checking for rubbed insulation exposing the wires.
To check if it's the front or back at fault. First remove front bulb,  operate turn switch - the back bulb won't blink but will light constantly. If it fails then fault is in front curcuit . If it doesn't repeat process by replacing front bulb and removing rear. It may help to wiggle wires at the same time. Also have a good sniff around the wires as a dead short will melt the wires around the break and the burning plastic smells horrible and distinctive. Best sort it asap as it could lead to general electrical fire and bye bye Herbie.
You should be grateful it's not an old landrover,  their notorious for electrical problems.

Cheers all electrics and I'm lost leaving it to a pro 35 years plus he's the local god of working on classic beetles.
