It definately is some sor of belt buckle. The tongue might have been made of iron and rusted away in antiquity. No size given, would help in future Mick?

i seen something similar on another forum it look's like a sword pommel. check out chainmail in one of the recent th mag's. he found a celtic sword pommel

I was thinking pommel Mike but the bar at the bottom doesn't make sense, it is definitely a pommel shape, good i.d.

hi all , and thanks for the joint effort in the i.d. i would go along with the belt slide or fitting sounds good to me, the date was given around 1400, forgot to mention earlier that there are signs of red  ennamel on it  thank you all mick
