I know this is a little late as I met a number of you at the Penpark Rally over the weekend but I didn't know about this brilliant site until middle of last week
and on logging in found the rally advertised straight away.
Anyway, Name is Mike and I live in Ystradgynlais in the upper end of the Swansea Valley. I'm a professional Photographer by trade and until recently, was
the Senior Photographer for the Media Department of the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd. I say until recently because due to cutback they even more recently,
made me redundant
Still, the silver lining is I've got more time to myself now..
Coming back to the subject of detecting, I attended the weekend's event with a detector I bought many many moons ago (C-Scope 1220-B) I know very old and
not very efficient compared to modern units. The stubble fields were very difficult for this machine as it doesn't give very good depth detection at the best of times
but when your holding the coil above the cut crop it was virtually detecting very little. I did have more luck in the pasture field as I could get the coil down to ground level.
I found quite a bit of ferrous metal and a few nice pieces which I've posted images of on the forum. I decide by the end of the day that I really enjoyed this pastime and it was time to look at getting a machine that would give me a fighting chance of finding whatever is there. So, did some research today and decided on a 'Golden Mask
3+'. I know its a little over the top for someone at my level but it has a two year warranty and is pretty future proof as far as developments go. Hopefully as my experience expands, so will my ability to use the unit to its full potential. Only trouble is I have to wait until Wednesday for it to arrive and I'm off to Belfast (would you believe from Cardiff -
flying over the very field we were using this weekend). on Friday so that's the weekend gone, still lots of roman history close to where I live so will have to start chatting to the local farmers with a hope of getting my own places to detect on.
