Title: Cut Quarter & Hallmark Post by: herbie on January 04, 2012, 04:07:12 PM Hello
Can anyone put an ID on this cut quarter, it's a short cross and I'm having a guess at a John! Also has anyone got any ideas on this hallmark, have trawled loads of sites but can't find anything, not sure if it's silver or EPNS, any help with these would be much appreciated. Cheers Herbie Title: Re: Cut Quarter & Hallmark Post by: Chef Geoff on January 04, 2012, 04:59:30 PM Yet another nice find Herbie, I'm not even going to attempt to id the quarter and will leave that to my betters...well actually the Doc ;)
I like you am so far running into blanks with the makers marks, though the picture of the ship behind the castle is very similar to the arms of Bristol. What exactly is the item or is it just a piece of random silver? Title: Re: Cut Quarter & Hallmark Post by: Chef Geoff on January 04, 2012, 05:19:21 PM Have you got a photo of the whole spoon? the shape of the spoon will give a clue, there is and as far as I know never been a Bristol hallmark but obviously if the spoon is old enough then it wouldn't be hallmarked anyway. The scratches in the surface don't seem to be showing any leaching of copper so it doesn't really look like EP either.
Title: Re: Cut Quarter & Hallmark Post by: herbie on January 04, 2012, 05:44:45 PM At first I thought it might be Scottish before I noticed the ship behind the castle, also what I thought was a thistle looks more like a Fleur de Lys, the closest thing I found for that was Culpar, but still couldn't find maker or the castle and ship, a mystery :)
Spoon is 15 cm long. Title: Re: Cut Quarter & Hallmark Post by: Chef Geoff on January 04, 2012, 05:57:43 PM Ah now seeing it like that I would say it was plate, It's post 1760 by it's shape so would be hallmarked, is that gold colour a result of your lighting or is that the copper showing through?

Cheers Geoff Think the gold colour is mainly down to bad light Thanks Herbie. Title: Re: Cut Quarter & Hallmark Post by: ysbytymike on January 04, 2012, 06:08:54 PM On the second image. Are those 'pitting' marks?
You'll get pitting on plated metal if you use electrical means of cleaning but put the positive terminal on the object you want to clean instead of the negative. Cheers Richard, I get a lot of Henry III's round here so that wouldn't be a surprise, have a had a look in Spinks but I'm pretty poor at I/Ding stuff ::) With regards the spoon if it was EPNS would it be marked as such with EP, A1, etc? Is there any way of telling if it is Sheffield Plate, still can't find that castle & ship mark.
