Nice to see that the BBC and English Heritage, did try and show us legal detectorists in a good light , i thought they went out of their way to mention the good work we do , as they could have just carried on about the nighthawkers and tarred us with the same brush.

I just saw this on the 9am News. Looked pretty hairy for the reporter as one of the nighthawkers charged at him with his shovel raised as if he was going to stave his head in!
I can't believe that they don't involve police in a piece like this when they know for certain a crime is being carried out. If they had then they would have been able to prosecute for trespassing, destroying a protected site and finally assault. Even though they did state that regular detectorists adhered to the rules this still paints a pretty poor picture of the hobby. Makes me damn angry!  Grr...  >:(

Could have turned out nasty for the reporters, they did'nt now what type of people they were dealing with, great guts by bbc reporters, good on them.
These type of people give the detectorist a bad name, BBC should have involved the police while they were filming  ???

hi watched it at 9am this morning, felt quite sick to be honest, and what other people  must think of us when they see us out and about. i hate to think. as said ealier they give the hobby a very  bad name, this time they have a recording of the one with the shovel, they should pass on video footage to police , and charge him with everything they possibly could, this "might" put of others .. it only needs one very stiff sentence to start with and a very heavy fine, and then seize every possible detector find in there property, night hawked or not and give it to local museum or similar :-[ :o :( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

well done the BBC,if only them informed the police because of the seriousness of their actions them might have had the use of a helicopter and they would have caught them.(viv)

as you all said, well done to the BBC this nighthawking as got to be
stopped, it gives us a bad image lets hope the police see the film
and go and arrest them all it makes you mad.

this progamme is being shown tonight(nov.9th) on BBC 1 SOUTH WEST at 7.30....it's called INSIDE OUT....it's on SKY.. channel 987 (i'm recording it)...for those without sky..you can get it on BBC iplayer....lets hope criminal convictions will come about due to the footage BBC have !...byron

  I meant to say earlier  that the guy from our club was checking to see if he could see an up to date club card in the car,    we have them to show the farmers that it is an uptodate club member in there if he do come around,

nar  can't get the sky on,  but iv'e found the iplayer thing,  Something else is listed but i'll  look in in case

Well done the BBC for exposing the Nighthawkes - it gives us all a bad name -HOWEVER  BEWARE THIS COULD ONLY  BE THE START OF CAMPAIGN BY ENGLISH HERITAGE AND SOME ARCHEOLOGISTS  TO LEVERAGE PUBLIC OPINION AGAINST THE HOBBY IN A BID TO CALL FOR TIGHTER REGULATIONS IN FUTURE. Nighthawks have been around since the hobby began -why the sudden interest now ???. Its up to everone involved in the hobby to emphasise  all the positves and  dispell the myths and fears that can be started by those wishing impose greater control over  what is for most of us -an innocent pastime .

Nighthawkers are Not metal detectorists they are simply Thieves who buy a metal detector just to steal from other people. simple as that.

Shesh   I have trouble finding anything worthwhile in bright sunshine .

it must be worth the Night hawker while to detect in the dark.

Couldnt English Heritage and the Archeologists invite Clubs or interested indiviuals to clear the sites of finds at depths a metal detector could detect ?
There would be nothing for night hawkers to find and it would stop.
Plus the wealth of new finds and info would keep museums busy for decades

I reckon, being as they banned fox hunting, they should make a new sport of night hawk hunting, with rotties instead of bloodhounds and quadbikes instead of horses

i think instead of leaveing it to others to cach nighthawkers why dont we get off bottoms and do something about it our selfs instead of just saying there giveing us a bad name .so i think its time we did something about it
