A Touch of Wind!

Today we headed to the Vale of Glamorgan for a rally set on pasture within touching distance of several recorded hoards.

Just over 50 diehard DW members braved the elements, which in fairness threw everything at us. It started with 70mph winds, then uped the ante with driving rain, and then turned decidedly frosty with sleet!

It was great to see lots of old and new members out today, including a large selection of Cardiff SCAN members in attendance. Nice to see you guys.

There was a guest appearance by Roman Ray today as well, complete with his plaster cast and crutches - Good to hear you are on the road to recovery mate.

Back to the rally and the first find of note came in the shape of hammered James 1st sixpence found by   . This was quickly followed by a Lizzy penny for Tom Clode. Unfortunately, neither were photographed as the weather was so bad by now people were running head down for their cars and disappearing. Any photos out there?

I made a few finds myself including a smattering of coppers, a George II penny (don't seem to find many of these} and a military button.

Zorro had a nice fleur de lys style token that unfortunately was a tad blank on one side.

The Big OX and I think Peter were warming themselves up with a bottle of rum, and Peter had already been rewarded for his 100 mile journey with a lovely condition George III sixpence. They had no intention of leaving no matter what the weather threw at them, as they were making a detecting weekend of it, with the beaches in sight for tomorrow. Good luck on the sand guys.

I recently had word from Proconsul that their luck improved even more in the afternoon with a Roman denarii for Peter and a Train button for the not so lucky Big Ox.

At about midday, Mark and I spent a frozen half hour pushing firstly RJM's toy car out of a rabbit hole  ;) and then the weekly push of Proconsul's van which once again was stuck ;D. Thanks go to Nobby, Mark, Ronnie and Dave for their help with that.

By the time I left at 1pm I was reduced to a shivering and teeth chattering mess. I have spent the rest of the afternoon sat in front of the fire at home, searching online for a waterproof coat, as mine clearly wasn't today!

That was it for me - it was a bit of a damp one to say the least. Those who stayed longer - well done. If anyone can add any finds to this post , feel free.

Thanks to the chaps who pushed me out of the mud...much appreciated.  I will hate that warmth in Spain after that refreshing outing.  I know how Scott of the Antartic felt in his last moments....but he could not lie in a hot bath for 1.5 hours when he arrived at base camp.

Amazing Denarii, I can only dream. Cracking day apart from the weather. I lived up to my name once again, so the finds are there and i'm even more determined now. Highlight of my day was helping liftt RJM's roller scate from a puddle, If Bob put the handbrake off it would have been blown into the next county! Thanks to all the organisers.

My 1 franc coin turned out to be a token issued by the French Chamber of Commerce in 1923. It says "Bon Pour 1 Franc", which must tell a story about how things were in France at that time. I'm happy.

thanks to all the admin for arranging the rally , nice to see everyone again , shame the weather was so unkind but we have been very lucky over the last 6/7 months .

Thanks to all who arranged the rally. I had no luck due to my coil packing in, ( it is rather old now, 12 years ). I would like to say a really big thank you to the member who offered me one of his E-trac coils to use, unfortunately the stem on my explorer was a little too long to accomodate the lead. It was a very kind and thoughtful deed, many thanks.
